09.06.1999 - P bei Tom Price

On yesterday rest-area it was like this: When you saw a light, you heard the vehicle eight minutes later & ten minutes further on it passed by. So that might have been 15 minutes - "quite some time".
Just now evening-traffic rushed through - the fourth car in two hours... With lots of dust so you could think there is a bush-fire on... First the clouds near the sun were voilet, now a deep blue-grey & and the sky in a light purple. 05:45 p.m., the day is ending.

14.06.1999 - Hearsonīs Cove/Karratha

I saw a nice sign in the Karijini NP, "small community, smaller children". In the Millstream Chichester NP some things had changed, too. 'Cause of flood damage we couldnīt see the whole park, the flying foxes were gone - the huge grasshopper too, what a relieve. They still raise orphaned kangaroos, so they can go back to the wild. Near Karratha/Hearsonīs Cove we took the scenic drive & Python Pool, went over private road to Dampier, where we knew there are hot showers for free - the first hot showers since Coral Bay.. We didnīt find our old rest-place from '95, and hence went back to Karratha - has grown quite a bit in those four years - now they also have Mc Donalds' & Chicken Treat. Today we went to the Woodside Visitor Centre of the North Shelf Gas Project (entrance free!) - very well done. But there is nowhere wood for our potatoes to be found. They are still kind of fresh, though.

Karratha

Especially the info-"movie" of the North Shelf Gas Project is just great; we bought the video. "It is the Biggest & one of the most important resource developments yet untertaken in Australia."

18.06.1999 - Broome

In Roebourne we went to see the old Goal, which holds also the Tourist-Centre. Beautiful from the architectural point of view: four big cells around a lightful inner courtyard. What had happened there certainly was not beautiful at all; booklets show mainly aboriginal people wearing chains around feet or/and neck. But at least they show it instead of covering up. And very much has changed here for the better; a colorful Aboriginie-Church & an even more colorful Youth-Centre had been added and the people are away from the streets.

In Port Headland we misses the ultra-long trains this time - four motor tractor, an overall length of 2,6 km & 34 000t of weight really is impressive.

We refilled the car at the Sandfire Roadhouse - & the woman there simply believed me that it was gas for $35...

Now weīre in Broome again - here also things have changed a lot; new shopping malls & residence houses have been addeed. Just the situation of the aboriginal people remained.

After a visit to Chicken Treat we went to the cinema, to Sun Pictures external link, the oldest, original open-air-cinema of the world!
"Life is beautiful" the movies' name was, but... it ran in the original language which was ITALIAN Tagebuch, I really laughed my head off, totally!!! When the lead came in italian, I nearly slipped from the seat! But it was really astonishing: Also as a german, who watches a movie in italian thatīs subtitled in english, I didnīt have the feeling to read english. After a short while I just watched a movie, relaxed. After the movie we went to the parking lot at Cable Beach for the night. Even if itīs busy, the city has advantages, too: No mossies. The stitches finally can heal a bit.

Yes. I worked on this on Valentinesīday. Well, itīs in the middle of the week...
